Hopefully you recognize the "splinter in your mind" quote as being from Morpheus in The Matrix! In this lecture, Steve discusses simulation science ... the idea that we are actually living in a matrix ... and links it to a variety of spiritual teachings for support. Please note that "simulation" and "matrix" and "video game" and "game" and "illusion" and more are all used interchangeably here, with the basic idea being this: physical "reality" is a subset of ultimate reality.
The definition of "complement" is "a thing that completes or brings to perfection." That's life and death ... a perfect complement. In this lecture, Steve discusses how what we call "dead" is not what we think it is and why being "alive" has little, if anything, to do with the physical body.
If someone asks you, "Tell me about yourself," how do you respond? With physical characteristics such as gender, race and age? Where you live? Your favorite food? Or do you explain that you are a divine spiritual being having a temporary human experience, sampling from an infinite buffet of consciousness manifestations? The ancient aphorisms Gnothi Seauton and Temet Nosce are statements indicating an ultimate quest to know oneself, but on a much deeper level than most people realize. It is not just about being comfortable with who you are as a human being, but realizing that you are eternally a wave function-collapsing being of conscious energy. (And much more.) In this lecture, Steve breaks down Einstein's most famous equation to provide a way to understand how we are primarily spiritual and secondarily physical, with philosophical support from the Bhagavad Gita and Jesus in John 3:3 - “Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again." Which means awakening to the Truth of who we really are.
*For having the same insight as Rumi! While we should celebrate Tom Brady's excellence (unless you WANT to be jealous), we should also heed his own words of wisdom. There is indeed more to life than winning Super Bowls. As Jesus teaches in Mark 8:36, "For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?" Better to lose the Super Bowl and win the awareness of one's True Self ... which is the ultimate championship. (Of course, nothing wrong with "winning" such awareness AND seven Lombardi Trophies! It's just that the former is more gratifying than the latter.) In this Flash of Light, Steve briefly links together the wisdom of Rumi, Brady and a few others to point out that we are all teammates with the same objective: to win our liberation from the only "defense" we've ever faced, the human ego.
In the Reality of Duality, neither the Left (Yin) nor the Right (Yang) can claim moral superiority. In Truth, the Holy Spirit unites both sides and must be present while communicating in order for anyone to be influential with anyone else. Otherwise, we are noisy gongs and clanging cymbals!

In Romans 5:3, Apostle Paul teaches that we should "rejoice in our sufferings." Then what does that mean we should do with our victories? Well, we should be very mindful of them, because "good things" that happen to us can suck us back into the illusion of the physical world being the source of our joy. True eternal joy, all the prophets teach, are not found in the triumphs of this illusory world. It is, however, found when we learn how to love our enemies and not only by loving our friends. P.S. The cover chess image is a visual representation of Matthew 16:46 - "For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?" In a competitive world, sometimes the ego knocks over the true spirit within.
Spirituality unites, politics divides. While people who see the world physically are locked in a battle of "good vs. evil" these days - from both sides of the aisle - the single eye of the Holy Spirit helps those who are more interested in "setting their minds on the things of God" (Matthew 16:23) recognize that "for everything thing there is a season" (Ecclesiastes 3:1) and that "all things work together for good" (Romans 8:28) for those who love God. If you recognize how UNITED this country is and always will be, then "blessed are your eyes because they see" (Matthew 13:16). In this lecture, Steve unites a variety of teachings from several different religions to point out how unified the entire world always is from a spiritual perspective. From Verse 29 of the Tao Te Ching: "Do you want to improve the world? I don’t think it can be done. The world is sacred. It can’t be improved."
Moments ago, we informed Murphy that 2020 was over and it was now 2021. At first, as you can see by the look in his cynical eyes, he couldn't believe it. But then, when the truth sank in, he let his emotions get the best of him and he lost his mind. (Which is a good thing for those of us who think too much!) May we all let our hearts take over and be as insanely joyful as our dogs in the New Year!
